Right off the bat, why Plena? What does it mean?
Just like the Noct engraving on the 58mm f/0.95, Plena is designed to help set apart how special this lens is. While we already have a number of f/1.8 primes that perform amazingly, this is a step above. Plena means “full to the brim” and “overflowing”, and it’s meant to be associated with capturing a lot of light, or creating beautiful, radiant images.
Distinctive names are given only to special NIKKOR lenses that have very unique characteristics. Plena is taking the Z mount to the limit, with one of it’s biggest headline features being able to realize perfectly circular bokeh throughout the entire frame, even while shooting wide open.
Anyone who has shot with a very fast portrait lens has seen bokeh with cats-eyes, that distinctive type of bokeh that gets more and more pronounced as you get closer to the edges of the frame. Even lenses that were universally loved, like the F mount 105mm f/1.4E lens exhibits heavy cats-eye bokeh near the corners. So now that you won’t shoot with any lens that shows even the smallest amount of cats-eye bokeh, what else is there to know about the 135 Plena:
Main Features:
- 1 Aspherical element
- 1 Short Wavelength Refractive (SR) element
- 4 ED elements
- ARNEO and Meso Amorphous Coating
- Dual AF motor design
- 11 aperture blades
- 82mm filter thread
- Weather sealed
- Almost the same size as the Z 85mm f/1.2 but is nearly 180g lighter
